Parkville
– By The Numbers
By Jim Spawn
What a huge success our 2004 Model A Appreciation Day turned
out to be! Titled, the Parkville Pancake and Poker Run, the
weather for this years event made up for the nasty day we
had last year.
The day was made up of several events:
| Car Show on Main Street. What a sight! Ace photographer
and Heart of America friend, Dr. Ed Kendrick, captured
some great shots all day. The photos taken from the lift
truck supplied by Paul Deister are awesome. Over 60 Model
A Fords were on display in the town. |

Pancake Breakfast: Chris Cakes did another excellent
job, although he got a little overwhelmed a time or two.
Thanks to willing helpers, George Deel, Harvey Roseberry
and others, we got right back on schedule. Two hundred
and seventy-nine people enjoyed breakfast with us. The
Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter came by with a half
dozen or so of their current residents to show them off
and demonstrate their caring work. |
| Poker Run: Many enjoyed their very first Poker Run through
the back roads of Platte County. Those nice folks who
volunteered for our Poker stations were mostly members
of the Platte County Trailblazers, an organization that
assists the Platte County-KCI Visitors and Convention
Bureau. Twenty-eight Model A’s participated and
all but three completed the run. |

Fund Raiser for the Parkville Animal Shelter: Our efforts
were very successful and appreciated by the Friends of
Parkville Animal Shelter, the volunteer group who oversee
the shelter. While it was impossible to count every bag
of food, our best estimate is that we collected a little
over 4,000 pounds of dog and cat food, plus some other
supplies. Many thanks to Lance Burton for supplying his
car trailer as the collection station for supplies and
delivery to the storage facility afterward. |
Awards Presentation: Kansas City Chiefs announcer, Bill Grigsby,
was kind enough to serve as our MC and did an outstanding
job. Parkville Mayor Kathy Dusenberry presented our club with
a very nice proclamation which was accepted by our president,
Chris Launer. She expressed Parkville's appreciation for what
we had done for the animal shelter and for the city itself.
Next, our Treasurer, Chuck Haber, presented a super-sized
check in the amount of $1,200 to the Parkville Animal Shelter!
This was in addition to the food and supplies mentioned above.
Sammie Rhoades was presented with a special appreciation award
for his good work in gathering dog and cat food. Sammie collected
over 1,100 pounds himself! Bill Magers received the long distance
award for driving his Model A Tanker down from Creston, Iowa.
Prizes were presented for the Poker Run participants and all
25 who completed the course received a prize. The value of
the cash and prizes presented was $554. Esther Spawn and Ella
Fayne deserve much of the credit for gathering these prizes.
They contacted many Parkville area merchants who donated either
prizes or money for the animal shelter. Ralph and Dorothy
Haggard were the big winners on the day with five Kings! They
won $100 cash.
In summary, this is a classic example of win-win between
a local community and good caring club, like ours. The City
of Parkville was very accommodating, providing a freshly overlaid
Main Street, traffic control, English Landing Park, extra
porta-poddies, publicity on cable TV, and even hung our banner
over Highway 9! This blend of our automotive history and their
community history made for the perfect cooperative union for
a great day.
