WHAT IS IMPORTANT?
The other day I was coming out of my local convenience store after purchasing a cup of coffee. A gentleman,
who looked to be in his seventies, also exited the store with me. Once out of the store this person looked at me
with a blank expression and said, “Where is my car?” I was taken back because I’d never met this person be-
fore and certainly didn’t know what car he was driving. He then said, “Maybe I drove my truck!” I was pon-
dering a response when the problem was solved. He said, “Wait a minute, there is my car.” He looked at me a
final time saying, “You never know.”
Forgetfulness might be a symptom of aging and getting old is a subject we don’t always feel comfortable dis-
cussing. Still, aging has some definite advantages and blessings. What seems like forgetfulness might be some-
thing else altogether. As we get older, we develop a sense of what is importance and what is not. A sports in-
terviewer was talking to George Brett shortly after Brett’s retirement. The interviewer asked Brett why he re-
tired when he still had a few good playing years left. Brett responded, “When we lost I was not as depressed as
I once was, and when we won I was not as happy as I once was.” Brett had moved on to discover other things
that were important in life and living besides playing baseball and having a winning season.
As we approach our 2006 Swap Meet and Model A Appreciation day, I hear comments of concern and worry.
These feelings are normal and are part of trying to put together a major event. Sure, all of us feel a little stress
as we face the workload of making this event a success. However, I think we need to evaluate what is really
important. In my opinion, what is important is the opportunity to spend some quality fellowship time with dear
Model A friends. Facing the challenges that are before us can bring us together in a special way. That is what
is important!
